Course Description

This course offers a general overview about Power Quality on yachts. The reliability of the electrical network on a yacht must be as high as possible. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of the electrical network but also to know which Power Quality phenomena may set the whole yacht operation at risk. Harmonics, flicker and unbalance among other phenomena are briefly explained including some possible unexpected scenarios that may be encountered on-board i.e. harmonic resonances, UPS going into saving mode, non-synchronizing generators, etc. Regulations and guidelines on Power Quality defined by different maritime classification societies (Lloyds, ABS, DNV GL) are also explained and compared in terms of assessing a good Power Quality during the yacht lifetime.

The course also dives into the different types of losses present on the electric network and proposes different solutions when it comes to solve or prevent Power Quality problems by summarizing all the cutting-edge technologies available on the market and used by HyTEPS and its customers. At the end of the course there will be a quiz to test your knowledge.
